Moloney, Vargas Eclipse School Records at NCAA Regional

Nov. 10, 2007

PEORIA, Ill. - Mary Moloney and Steve Vargas established new school records as the Billikens culminated their successful 2007 cross county campaign at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill. Moloney covered the 6K course in 21:43, while Vargas notched SLU's 10K record with a time of 32:15. The women's squad finished 17th in the regional field, while the men pulled in at 20th overall.

"I am happy with the way both teams finished the season," Billiken interim head coach Jon Bell said. "Mary ran a terrific race today, and at the 5K mark she had bettered the 5K school record. It was also great for Steve to end his cross country career on such a high note. With the women finishing close to the top 15, and with the majority of our team coming back next year, we should be close to being ranked in our region, which would be great for this program."

Senior Laura Coyer competed in her final cross country event and crossed the line with a respectable time of 21:50. Sophomore Molly Burke, who is completed her first year of cross country after coming over from the women's soccer team, was the third Billikens finisher after clocking 22:50. Lauren Verzal (22:58), Sara Fraley (23:06), Amanda Labuz (24:08) and Laura Peabody (24:41) followed for the Bills.

Vargas, who earlier this season established the school standard in the 8K, paced the squad with Neal Rodrigues (33:20) and Brian Holdmeyer (33:21) following. Senior Tim Hamilton closed out his cross country career with a time of 34:07, while Mat Stuber did the same after clocking a time of 34:42. Scott Vicker (34:50) and Greg Orf (36:05) rounded out the Billiken finishers.

The squads now begin preparations for the indoor track and field campaign, which kicks off on Dec. 7 with a meet at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill.
